What Are

indicorns

Unicorns make the headlines. We wanted to count the bedrock - companies that have reached a point of sustainability . So we asked a simpler question: what's the right metrics to identify such companies?

A business that crosses ₹100 crore in revenue and turns a profit is unlikely to go out of business, and it is companies like these, in volume, that become the listed businesses of the next decade.

An Indicorn is a company that:

  • Was founded in India within the last 15 years
  • Crossed ₹100 crore in revenue in the last financial year
  • Was profitable in that year

The Origin of the Indicorn

September 2024

On the main stage at TechSparks, India's largest startup summit, Kunal Bahl introduced a word the ecosystem didn't have: Indicorn.

The businesses it described had been building quietly for years: profitable, growing, and largely unfunded. They had every marker of success except one: recognition. A month later, Titan Capital published the first list.

On the main stage of YourStory's TechSparks India's largest startup summit - Kunal Bahl introduced one word to the ecosystem: Indicorn.

It wasn't just a new word. It was a challenge to change how India defines, celebrates, and aspires toward success measured in revenue and profit, not a valuation set in someone else's currency.
